How to fix a clogged shower drain

More than ever, people are looking for ways to save money at home through DIY projects and repairing things in their home that would otherwise be very costly. Clogged drains, for example, are among one of the most common plumbing problems, causing water to back up and eventually slow the flow of the water as well. With only a few hardware, store-bought tools and simple at-home solutions, you too can fix a clogged shower drain without breaking the bank.

Drain snake

Your experience while showering is usually a relaxing and refreshing time. Now, imagine having dirty, standing water up to your ankles while you shower thanks to your clogged drain. Not so much of a pleasant time anymore, is it? Hair is usually the main culprit as to why a clogged drain occurs. To quickly remove built-up hair underneath the drain, use a drain snake like the ones sold in hardware stores. With a simple push and tug, you will quickly notice a majority of the hair quickly comes up and water begins to flow down as it should. For further prevention of the problem, remember that having a hair catcher will help reduce the amount of hair going down the drain.

Using the plunger

You may be surprised to know that you can use the plunger in the shower, not just on the toilet. For the plunger to effectively do its job, there needs to be sufficient water in the tub (enough to cover the surrounding cup or base of the plunger). As you apply pressure, make sure the handle remains vertical and not in an angled position at all times. This will ensure that the seal does not break. Continue to apply pressure up and down for about twenty seconds. With a little arm work, water should flow back in no time.

Boiling water and natural solution

Pouring boiling water down the shower drain does wonders. Best of all? It is free and natural! It will help loosen up any soap scum and residue well underneath the pipes. Also recommended is a combination of vinegar and baking soda solution following the first method. You will want to first pour the boiling water down and then proceed to use equal parts of vinegar and baking soda. Give the solution a few minutes to truly seep in and then flush down the remains with more boiling water. Some like to use a few drops of lemon to disinfect and add a clean natural scent. Do avoid using any chemical unblockers that claim to do the job as they can corrode the actual pipe and are very potent.
