5 Biggest Plumbing Myths: Busted

There are many tales we have had repeated to ourselves for years, and now many of us live by those tales day to day. Some of these prove to be useful life hacks, while others need to be chalked up to useless information our grandparents heard from their pastor’s neighbor’s doctor. Plumbing is no different. In fact, you’ve probably heard more myths about plumbers and plumbing solutions than you can remember. Here are a few myths about plumbing that we simply cannot let you believe any longer.

Myth: Citrus can help clean your disposal.

Fact: Putting limes, lemons or orange chunks down your garbage disposal may help it smell extra fresh temporarily, but the oils from the fruit’s rind can actually help clog your disposal quicker. The thickness of the skins will dull the blades, making it harder to grind your leftovers.

Myth: It’s just a little faucet drip.

Fact: Leaky faucets may seem like a small issue that can be put on the back burner, but in reality they are costing you some unnecessary cash. Think about how many times your faucet drips over the course of an hour. Then multiply that by however many days that pesky thing has been leaking. You have probably paid an extra 10-15% of your water bill since it started. Not to mention, a faucet leak can be a surfacing symptom of some underlying damage. Don’t wait to get it fixed.

Myth: Running the water helps the disposal function.

Fact: Generally speaking, running water may help wash down whatever you’re grinding, but many folks have taken this to the extreme. Just because you are running water does not mean you can put whatever you choose down the disposal. There are several things that should never go down the drain, regardless of how much water you run:

  1. Coffee grounds
  2. Egg shells
  3. Bones (small or large)
  4. Grease
  5. Banana peels
  6. Thick food items
  7. Non food products

Myth: “If it ain’t broke”… it doesn’t need fixing.

Fact: Never wait until something is wrong to call a plumber. It is always a good idea to have your sink, toilets, faucets and water lines checked annually. Paying a small fee to have someone run a routine check can save you a huge fee down the road.

Myth: Plumbers are all the same.

Fact: Just because a person is a racecar driver, doesn’t mean they are qualified to race any old car. This rings true in the plumbing world as well. For all your plumbing needs, no matter how big or small, do your research on different companies. Some may specialize in a certain area. But even if they don’t, make sure they are licensed professionals that are insured. Read their reviews!
